Indian, UK Scientists To Team-Up In Nanotech (22, Nov 2006)
As an outcome of "Building Futures: Indo-UK Nanotechnology Conference" ended on 21, Nov 2006 in Kolkata, Indian and British scientists have decided to take up a joint programme on he emerging Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and further ongoing research in the field, which internationally attracts investment of over $10 billion.

  • Nanoscience and nanotechnology, explores and exploits tools and techniques that seamlessly cross the boundaries of physics, chemistry, material science, biology and engineering.
  • There was 'incredible' investment in European countries, the US and Japan on nanotechnology development.

E-Clearance Of Cheques Soon In Delhi / NCR (17, Nov 2006)
The cheques received form other cities can soon be credited in the respective accounts, within two days time in the NCR (National Capital Region). At present the process takes 10 days time.

  • After the introduction of the new system, the cheque will not travel physically that the bank where the cheque is being deposited will scan it and its electronic image will be sent to clearance centre.
Google, Yahoo, Microsoft Adopt Same Web Index Tool (16, Nov 2006)
Search engine competitors Google, Yahoo and Microsoft are teaming up to make it easier for Web site owners to make sure their sites get included in the Web indexes.
  • The companies are adopting Google's Sitemaps protocol, available since June 2005, which enables Web site owners to manually feed their pages to Google and to check whether their sites have been crawled.
  • Web site owners have had to follow similar processes at each of the other major search engines separately. But with this initiative they will offer a place to submit Web pages to all three search engines at once, instead of performing the process at each site

India's First Cosmonaut Ready To Go To Space Again(15, Nov 2006)
As India thinks over a maiden manned space mission in 2014, its first cosmonaut Wing Cdr (retired) Rakesh Sharma has said, he would be ready to join the endeavor if given a chance.

  • Sharma spent eight days in space aboard the Salyut 7 space station with two Soviet cosmonauts in April 1984. Then a squadron leader, Sharma conducted multi-spectral photography of northern India in anticipation of the construction of hydroelectric power stations in the Himalayas.
  • Sharma, who was conferred the country's highest civilian gallantry award, the Ashoka Chakra, with the two Russian cosmonauts of his mission, made no secret of his eagerness to return to space again.

Israeli Scientist Developing 'Cancer-Sniffing' Device
Hossam Haiek, a leading Israeli scientist a researcher at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, is developing a 'cancer-sniffing' device. He has won a grant of almost two million US dollar to develop an 'electronic nose' to sniff out cancer.

  • The researcher aims to develop tiny, nanometric sensors that can detect various types of tumors and determine various stages of the disease using samples from a patient's breath.
  • Haiek is expected to set up a new lab and hire researchers from Israel and abroad to develop the diagnostic device.
