Jagdish Sharan Verma was the 27th Chief Justice of India from March 25, 1997 until his retirement on January 18, 1998. In the aftermath of a gang rape in Delhi, which resulted in the victim's death, on 23rd December 2012 Justice Verma was appointed Chairperson of a three member commission to suggest changes required in existing laws to provide better security to Women in India. He submitted his report in record time and some of his recommendations are converted into ordinance by the government.
